NOTE - Thomas had the unusual middle name of "Bate".  This is usually a name derived from an ancestor and often relates to the female maiden name.  But so far, I have not been able to find the source of this second name of "Bate".  Still searching......

1827 – Marriage to Elizabeth Garmans

 
Thomas Bate Ford married Elizabeth Garmans after banns on February 18, in 1827 at Saint Phillip’s Church in Birmingham.  
 
It is often difficult to read the old parish records, but it is without doubt the spelling of Elizabeth’s surname is “Garmans”.  Neither party had been previously married.  Thomas Bate Ford signed his name to the register, whereas Elizabeth made her mark.  
 
Witnesses to their marriage were Ann Garmans and Joseph Garmans.

1827 – Birth of son, Thomas Ford


 
Soon after their marriage came the birth of their first-born child – a son – whom they named Thomas after Thomas Bate Ford’s father and his grandfathers.  Baby Thomas was christened on August 8 in 1827 at Saint Martin’s Church in Birmingham, Warwick.

1828 – Birth of Daniel Ford
A second son, Daniel Ford – soon followed.  He was christened on December 26, 1828, also at Saint Martin’s Church in Birmingham, Warwick

Their third son, Joseph Ford, was born on October 29, 1830.  He was christened at Saint Martin’s Birmingham on December 27, 1830.  This boy was to become my great-great-grandfather.  At the time of baby Joseph’s baptism, the family were living in Edgbaston Street in Birmingham and Thomas Bate Ford was working as a Japanner

After six years of marriage, Thomas Bate Ford and Elizabeth Garmans had four sons and in 1833, greeted another son whom they named William Ford, born on February 3;, 1833. He was christened on March 4, 1833, at Saint Martin’s Church.  The family still lived in Edgbaston Street in Birmingham.

1834 – Death of William Ford
But not for long did little William Ford survive.  He died at just one year and 8 months old and was buried on September 17 in 1834 in the graveyard of Saint Martin’s Church.  Thomas and Elizabeth were living in Hill Street, Birmingham.

 Thomas Bate Ford died on January 4, 1848 at home at 5 Hospital Street, Birmingham
 He was 43 years old
 His occupation had been Japanner
 Cause of death was Phthisis which he suffered for at least his last 4 months
 The informant was his wife, Elizabeth Ford of the same address
 His death was registered on January 7, 1848
NOTE - Definition of Phthisis is pulmonary tuberculosis or a similar progressive wasting disease which was also known as consumption.
 This disease was very common in the people who worked in the metal industries.

After Thomas' death, Elizabeth continued to live at the address at which her husband had died.  The 1851 census showed that four of her children were still living with her.

Where did Elizabeth live during these years?  I have not been able to find her on the 1861 or the 1871 census returns.  Perhaps she was in the work house or the infirmary?  

1873 - Death of Elizabeth Garmans
At age 67 years, in September of 1873, Elizabeth died at Birmingham, Warwickshire.
I have found a record for a burial for Elizabeth - Burial Date - September 1873 at Warstone Lane Cemetery, Birmingham.
