 At Dumfries on 6th September 1881, Janet Geddes, daughter and residing with her father, Matthew Geddes, of Halleaths, Lochmaben, with her father as her administrator in law, take action against Laurence Borthwick, constable at Lochmaben to make payment to Janet Geddes £2 / 2/ - being what Janet Geddes incurred in giving birth to an illegitimate male child at Halleaths Cottage on 14th May 1881 of which child Laurence Borthwick is the father.

Also the sum of £6 yearly, payable half yearly in advance for the next year, starting on 14th May, 1881 then 14th November, 1881, then yearly after that until the child reaches the age of 10 years. If payments are late, then interest at the rate of £5 per cent yearly.

Plus the sum of £3 /14/ 6d for this legal process, plus £3 for the recording of this process.
