Rosa was born at Delamere but soon after birth went with her parents to live on Kangaroo Island where she attended school until the age of nine. Then the family moved to Brighton and three years later to Edithburgh where they lived next to the old school.
Prior to her marriage, Rosa worked at various places and jobs including at the Edithburgh Police Station, at a furniture shop called Durnels, then as a housekeeper for various families, including a Mrs. Warren.
After her marriage to Christopher Charles Short, they lived in many places in South Australia, but during that time, Rosa either owned or managed several stores, including one at 107 Commercial Road, Port Adelaide. Here the family lived above the store and it is told that while Rosa was working in the shop, her young children were minded by local aboriginal women.
Charles was a very good dancer and started dancing lessons at the Coobowie Hall. He also built and repaired boats, the largest of which was 34 feet long.
In retirement, he continued his love of boat building, instead building model sail boats.
