1875 – Birth – Bertha Warren

She probably had an average childhood for the times in which she lived, moving from place to place as her father sought to better the family’s life and income.
When she was just 16 years old, her mother died in Kaniva, Victoria, after which her father took his remaining family back to Happy Valley.
How it happened or why, we shall never know, much less understand, but by the time Bertha was 20 years old in 1895, she fell pregnant to her father, Oliver Warren. Oliver was charged, tried, and found guilty of incest with Bertha and went to jail with hard labour for 12 months. It is probable the judge was lenient with his sentence because he was shown to be a feeble-minded man, greatly affected by the death of his wife and last-born child and beset by failure in everything he attempted.
Bertha’s pregnancy resulted in the birth of a baby who lived only a few days.
After the awful business with her father, Bertha must have been a troubled woman, with shame weighing heavily on her mind – her family may have extended sympathy - the wider community could have been very judgemental.
1914 – Electoral Roll – Bertha Warren
Bertha never married and spent at least some of her time with relatives in Gippsland, Victoria.
Bertha’s sister, Charlotte, married to Arthur William Appleton, died in 1910. The 1914 electoral records for Narang in Gippsland, show Bertha in the household of Richard James Appleton, grazier, Ada Appleton, home duties, and Charlotte’s widowed husband, Arthur William Appleton.
