1916 – Military Service – William John Edwards
World War 1 started and life many other young men, William John Edwards enlisted.  He signed up for duty on June 5, 1916.  He became No. 2858 Private Edwards of the 2nd Pioneer Brigade of the Australian Imperial Forces.  His enlistment document showed his date and place of birth and gave his occupation as waiter / cook.    He lived at 57 Surrey Road, South Yarra with his wife Ivy and their two children – Agnes (aka Sally) and Merva.

His physical description is given as 24 years 6 months old, height 5 feet 9 ¼ inches, weight 126 pounds, chest measurement 32-35 inches.  He was of medium complexion with brown eyes and black hair.

Following his training at Seymour in Victoria, he was appointed private and became part of the 6/2 Pioneer Battalion.

On September 20, 1916, he left Australia for England, then onto Havre in France.  Whilst in France, he was billeted at a chateau belonging to people by the name of de Fourney.  They were kind and helpful people and they had a daughter named Marcelle.  Once William returned to Australia, his next daughter was to be named Marcelle in remembrance of those kind people.

At the end of 1918, he was sent on leave to England, but just a few weeks later, was reassigned to his unit in France where he remained until near the end of 1919.  Most of his time in the AIF he served abroad.  Then in July 1919, he returned to Australia and was discharged from duty.  He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

1919 – Discharge from Military Service
After William’s discharge he and his family lived at 4 Beresford Street, Caulfield, Victoria.  He found work as a caretaker at Sun Insurance and he was provided with a flat on the seventh floor of their building.  Later they moved to Ormond.

William was an accomplished musician and played the violin, as did Ivy.  They played in a band in a small country town, first and second violin.  Ivy had a good singing voice.

1943 – Burial – William John Edwards
William suffered from the effects of having been gassed during the war and his health was never great afterwards.  He died at 50 years of age at Caulfield Military Hospital on January 29, 1943.

After the death of William, Ivy sold their house and took her four daughters to live in a boarding house at 117 Alma Road, St. Kilda.

Remarriage – Ivy Olive Warren
Although my research found stories that Ivy remarried after the death of William to Charles Cooling, I could not find the marriage registration.  And it is worth noting that her death registration is in the name of her first husband.
