AN INVETERATE DRUNKARD.Wife Tells of Her Tribulations.Eleanor Mildred Upton, 33, of Hotham street, Preston, pleaded desertion as the ground of her application for divorce from her husband, Ernest William Upton, 53, of unknown parts—an address peculiar to re-spondents in like position. The petitioners was a tale of long suffering, Upton, who was a boiler maker by trade, was an inveterate drunkard. He lost position after position, and time and again she begged his reinstatement. She interceded for him at Newport several times, and at the Austral Otis works over and over again, and each time he betrayed the confidence she had induced others to place in him.More than that, he deliberately "went on the drunk," refusing to be sober, and declaring his intention to go the whole hog. And he certainly was a hog. Once she clad him in a new suit of clothes, towards the cost of which her mother had contributed, and he went away consumed with thirst, and returned in rags that stank so frightfully, she employed the tongs to convey them to the copper. He was so confirmed in his drinking habits that she arranged for his transfer to the Lara Institute from which he escaped twice, and was at length told be would not be tolerated any more. After that petitioner and her mother gave him several more chances to reform, but though he took the pledge again and again, he invariably broke it in a few minutes, and returned to them in a most pronounced state of intoxication. Finally to their mutual relief, he took him-self off, and had not been seen for several years. The suit being undefended, his Honor granted a decree nisi.Truth (Melbourne ed.)
