DEATH OF MRS L. LAUNDER
NECESSITY FOR A MIDWIVES ACT
In the Coroner’s Court last week, before an Acting Coroner and a jury of three, an inquest was held, concerning the death of Mrs. Leonide Launder of Perth on August 3.

Inspector Sallinger conducted the inquiry on behalf of the police and Mr. E. Hare watched the proceedings on behalf of the nurse.
The jury returned a verdict that death was due to septic peritonitis and added a rider that all nurses should be certificated, as owing to their calling grave responsibilities rested upon them.
“Western Mail” (Perth), Saturday, 26 August 1905

WESTERN AUSTRALIA, PERTH, August  15
DEATH FROM PERITONITIS.
At an inquest held on the body of Leonide Launder today, Dr. McWilliams said he was called in and found the deceased suffering from peritonitis. Sometime previously, Nurse Pearse had been attending the deceased, and the nurse had not recognised the gravity of the case, or she would have summoned him earlier. He considered that an Act should be passed making it compulsory for ail nurses to be registered under the Midwifery Act.

Nurse Pearse testified that the deceased refused to have a doctor, although the witness had urged on her the necessity of calling one. The deceased confessed that she had attempted to bring about abortion.

Septimus Launder, the deceased's husband, said his wife had suffered severely, when her other two children were born.

The jury returned a verdict that death was due to septic poisoning; and added a rider to the effect that all nurses should be certificated.
