Emma Smith was a theatrical dresser and she married William Webb, a professional singer in 1884 in Victoria.
Following Emma's uncle George Launder's lease of 91 acres of and at Wonga Park in 1893, Emma and William took possession of one of the plots and eventually built a house on it. Lilydale rate books show that the Webb family occupied 13 acres with a house from at least 1895. William Webb is recorded as the owner of the property for the first time in 1898. The area was known as the Wonga Park Village Settlement.
Emma and William ran a guest house at their Wonga Park property for theatrical friends. The guest house was called Forest Gate then later renamed White Lodge. It has been placed on the Victorian Heritage data base - which describes it -
The former Forest Gate is of local significance as a surviving guest house of the 1890's with turn of the century additions, demonstrating the importance of tourism even at this early date. It has important historical associations with Emma Webb, theatrical dresser, niece of George Launder, carpenter and builder and eight hour pioneer.Source : Victorian Heritage database online and The Launder Story by Margaret Batten
But early in 1900, William Webb was killed returning home from Melbourne one night. He was found at the side of the road with an overturned dray across his jaw on the Yarra Road, only one and a half miles from home. He was dead. He had been to Melbourne earlier that day with a load of wood and was on his way home when it appears that his horse had swerved off the road. One of the dray's wheels had hit a tree which had capsized the dray. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
The article states that he left a wife and three children and was well-known in musical circles, having been associated at one time with Harry Rickard's Company and that he had been expected to sing at Atheneum Hall on the Saturday night following his death.

Emma spent some time away from the Wonga Park property, probably at Highgate House in Canterbury leaving tenant at White Lodge. She returned in about 1908 to Wonga Park. Emma died on December 30 in 1948 at the age of 86 years. She was buried at the Box Hill Cemetery, Box Hill.
