John Henry Gill (or variously Henry John Gill) who was husband to Ethel Jane Christie, joined the Australian Navy, and was a Lt. Commander during the Boxer Rebellion which took place in China between 2 November 1899 and 7 September 1901.
John Henry Gill also fought at the Battle of Jutland – a naval battle fought between Britain’s Royal Navy Grand Fleet and the Imperial German Navy’s High Seas Fleet during the First World War. It took place between May 31 and June 1 in 1916 and it was the only major encounter between the main British and German battle fleets during this war. It was fought near Skagerrak, an arm of the North Sea about 97 km off the west coast of Jutland in Denmark.
