Edward Bellingham -
Edward's father, Richard Bellingham may have died between 1836 and 1841 because the 1841 census has Edward living with his grandparents, John and Mary in Tonbridge. After the death of his grandmother, Mary, in 1851, Edward, aged 14 and working as an errand boy was living with his grandfather, John, in Sevenoaks. But, his grandfather died in 1853, leaving Edward alone at age 16 years.Edward left Kent and is found 4 years later in Brighton where he married Ellen Smith in 1857. A son, Alfred Edward Bellingham, was born in 1858. In 1859, Edward wds charged in Sussex with stealing "a post letter while working in the Post Office". He is found guilty and sentenced to 3 years in jail. While Edward was in jail, his wife, Ellen and child, Alfred, emigrated to Australia, but Alfred died in Victoria 1860.On completion of his sentence at HMS Convict Establishment in Portsea, Portsmouth, Edward emigrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne on the ship "True Briton" on September 1862. Edward and Ellen had 6 more children between 1863 and 1876 and lived together for a further 20 years. Edward is listed as a Richmond pioneer.
1859 - Edward Bellingham - Guilty

Edward Bellingham, aged 23 years, Married with 1 child, who could read and write well, was convicted on March 21 in 1859 at Lewes Assizes for stealing a post letter, being employed in a Post Office. He was sentenced to 3 years. He had no previous convictions and his behaviour was good, although a later report stated his behaviour as bad. His wife, Ellen Bellingham who had been living with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Smith at 29 Kensington Place in Brighton, visited her husband on June 14, 1859 and announced that she was going to Australia.
