MASKED ROBBER - Meets His Match A Desperate Struggle for Bag of Cash - Foiled by Plucky Waiter
A sensational attempt at robbery was reported, to the detectives this morning. Charles Victor Warren, a waiter employed at a city restaurant, was attacked by a masked man outside his residence in West Brunswick, but after a struggle he succeeded in maintaining hold of a leather bag which contained £40 in cash, which represented the day's takings. On certain nights in the week Warren took the place of the manager at the restaurant, and it was part of his duty to take home the cash.Warren worked last night, and he caught the last train home. He arrived at Moreland Street railway station about 12.20 a.m. On reaching his residence about 200 yards from the station, he opened the front gate and was surprised to see a dark object on the front veranda. At first he thought it was a chair, but not being satisfied he walked towards it.The dark object, however, turned out to be a masked man, who immediately made a rush at Warren. The latter held tightly to his bag containing the cash. He received a stinging blow in the face, but was not deterred, and rushing at the intruder made several blows at him.The men got into holds, and a brief struggle followed. Warren’s main concern was his bag, and in holding onto this securely he was forced to let his assailant go. The man dashed out of the gate and ran towards the railway line.Warren followed, calling out “thief” repeatedly. Four men were observed approaching in an opposite direction. Warren called out loudly that these men could intercept the fugitive. The man replied by calling out “Murder, Murder” at the' top of his voice and the men believing that it was only a quarrel, did not attempt 'to interfere. The would-be thief who had taken off his mask kept going and disappeared. Warren described his assailant as about 25 years of age, 5ft 5in. in height and of medium build.Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 - 1950), Friday 17 April 1914
1922 – East Carrum Ratepayers League
A well-attended meeting of East Carrum Ratepayers' League was held last Saturday evening at the residence of Mr. Victor Warren, "Alma Villa," Westley Street. The vice-president (Mr. Kerslake) occupied the chair, and there were about 35 present. Under correspondence a copy of a letter to the council from the Electric Light Co. was received, which stated that, as no prospects of revenue for some time would be derived by the extension on the McLeod Road, the directors "do not feel justified in spending money in the locality." They also stated that the cost of extending the light would be about £100.
The matter occasioned considerable discussion, and the opinion of the meeting was that the petition sent from the League was not sufficiently considered by the council before sending it to the Electric Light Co. The petition, which was signed by 24 ratepayers, stated that they were prepared to pay half the cost of the 10 poles that would be required. As to there being no prospect of revenue, that was incorrect, as the petition stated that 10 or more property owners would become immediate consumers. It was decided that the secretary write to the Town Clerk asking for a copy of the letter sent by the Council to the Company. The Council are also asked to allow permission for a notice board to be erected at corner of Station Street and McLeod Road. A further request was that a footbridge on side of McLeod Road bridge be placed for the safety of the school children. After accounts and minor business was dealt with, the meeting adjourned for a Harmony Night. The items on the programme were as follows:—Song, Mr. Kerslake; song, Mr. Westray; pianoforte solo, Miss Eastwood; recitation, Miss Mena Edwards; duet, Messrs. Warren Bros.; violin solo, Mr. Edwards; recitation, Mr. Arnott; piano solo, Master Percy Warren; duet, Messrs. Westray Bros. Miss Eastwood, from Melbourne, officiated at the piano, and played many well-known songs, the company joining in the chorus.A hearty vote of thanks to the artists was proposed by the chairman, who thanked them for the fine programme which had been given, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. In responding the artists stated that at a future date they would be pleased to again offer their services.Supper was partaken of, and the evening concluded with the National Anthem. Great credit is due to the hon. secretary, Mr. Leonard L. Warren, for arranging the program.Frankston and Somerville Standard (Vic. : 1921 - 1939), Friday 9 June 1922
