George Warren’s Story
I have discovered a mystery regarding George Warren and his elder sister, Elizabeth Warren’s births and parentage.
When I searched for the marriage record for George’s father, John Warren, and the birth records for these two children, I found these facts –
• Mary Manning was born in 1819 to James Manning and Elizabeth Snell in Langham, Suffolk.• Mary had an older sister, Elizabeth who was born five years earlier in 1814.• Elizabeth Manning married John Warren on September 24 in 1830 in Langham but unfortunately, the records in those days did not include the names of the parents of either brides or grooms.• At the time of the marriage between Elizabeth Manning and John Warren, John would have been between 19 and 21 years of age and Elizabeth would have been about 16 years old.• Five years after their marriage, in 1835, a child named Elizabeth Warren was born in Langham to John and Elizabeth Warren• A baby boy followed two years later in 1837 – named George Warren – also in Langham.• Elizabeth Warren, nee Manning, died the same year as her son, George, was born – in 1837.• Three years later, in 1840, John Warren married Mary Manning.• At this marriage John stated that he was a bachelor of 29 years old and his bride, Mary, was 22 years old.• In the 1841 census –
• John gave his age as 29 years – so his birth date would have been about 1812• Mary was 22 years old – birth date about 1819• Elizabeth was 6 years old – birth date about 1835• George was 4 years old – birth date about 1837
Other children followed the marriage of John Warren and Mary Manning and their decision to emigrate to Australia in 1851 with their then six children can be found in the story of John Warren and Mary Manning.
But this is George Warren’s story.
That he arrived at Adelaide with his family we know from shipping records. He would have been about 14 years old – an age at which most young lads were considered to be of working age.
He may have helped his father settle the family in Happy Valley and build their hut – but I have no evidence of this.
He may have been caught up in the gold fever that swept the settlement just after his arrival into Australia and like many other young men at the time, thought to make his money an easier way than that which his father had chosen.
Or he may have resented the fact that his Aunt Mary had taken the place of his mother, Elizabeth and there were tensions in the family as a result.
However, I can find no evidence of any movements for our George Warren after his arrival at Adelaide.
I have found some marriages that may be our George, but again, no evidence to support a conclusive decision. I am still searching – perhaps for a descendant of George who will positively lead me back to his parents in Adelaide.
These are two of the marriages that I considered –
1) May 10, 1862 to Louise Youngman
- 1862, May 10 in Adelaide, George Warren, a Plasterer of full age, father’s name John Warren, residence Adelaide, married Louise Youngman, of full age, father’s name, Jesse Youngman at the Christ Church, Adelaide.
- Witnesses to the marriage were Andrew Norton, Carpenter of 14 Robe Terrace, Adelaide, and Catherine (surname indecipherable) of Robe Terrace, Adelaide. George signed his name. Louise signed with a cross.
- This couple went on to have two daughters –
- 1863 – Florence Warren
- 1866 – Louise Warren
If this is ‘our’ George, his age would have been 25 years.
2) April 4, 1855 to Lucy Cave
- 1855, April 4 at Springfield, Barossa, George Warren married Lucy Cave
- This couple had at least 11 children between 1856 and 1875, four of whom died young at Gawler.
- None of the children’s names gives any clue – Charles Herbert, John Campbell, Lucy Ellen, Emily Jean, Annie Lilias, George William, Lydia Rose, James Ernest, Frank Kenneth, and Kate Hilda
- Lucy Cave died in 1912 aged 75 years.
This George would have been about 18 years old at his marriage
There were many more leads I followed without conclusion. I have seen other researchers decide that the marriage to Louise Youngman is the correct one, but I am yet to be convinced.
