1895, October – Illegitimate Child

AN AFFILIATION CASE.
A girl of 18, named Leila Maud Collins, proceeded against a man named Walter Launder, at the North Melbourne court yesterday, for the maintenance of her illegitimate child.

The complainant gave evidence that the defendant had seduced her under a promise of marriage. She had known him for two or three years. On the 26th ult, she gave birth to a child, of which the defendant was the father.

Francis Collins said that he was the father of last witness. The defendant used to visit his house, keeping company with complainant. When he learned of his daughter's condition, he interviewed Launder, who asked for time to give an answer.

Defendant had a business at Lygon Street, Carlton.

Dr. Lloyd; What is he?

He's a tailor and comic singer — (a laugh)— and be earned about £4 or £5 per week.

The bench made an order for the sum of 7s 6d., to be paid weekly, the defendant to find a surety of £25 for its fulfilment, and to pay £2 2s, costs.

WALTER LAUNDER is charged, on warrant issued by the North Melbourne Bench, with failing to find sureties for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, at North Melbourne, on the 14th inst.

Description – Victorian, tailor, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, clean shaved, wore dark clothes and dark boxer hat.  October 17th, 1895
