1920 - Jewellery Robbery – Henry Richard, Allen Ernest, Eric Charles Rankin

SIX MEN CHARGED
The defendants were before the Police Court on Monday.  They were Leslie Garnet Jolly (labourer), Henry Richard Rankin (Salesman), Allen Ernest Rankin (ice cream vendor), James Malone (Barman), Hedley John Stutey dealer), and Eric Charles Rankin.

Henry Richard Rankin, who was described by Mr. Alderman as the “leader of the whole lot” was charged by Duncan Harry McDougall with having on or about July 9 stolen a manicure set, a nickel watch, a pair of gold sleeve-links, and a cameo brooch, valued at £7/ 17/ 6d., the property of the informant.

The other men were alleged to have had jewellery and other goods unlawfully in their possession.  There were two counts against Malone – one in respect to jewellery and the other in regard to liquor.  Mr. F.G. Hicks represented Alan Ernest Rankin, Malone and Henry Richard Rankin, and Mr. J.W. Nelligan appeared for Eric Charles Rankin.

When the case of Jolly was called Mr. Alderman said a more serious charge might be laid against the defendant.  Jewellery worth about £1,000 was missing and the police had recovered goods worth £300.  The alleged thefts had been going on for a long time.  The hearing was adjourned.  Bail was fixed in each case at £200, with two sureties of £100 each.

ADELAIDE, Wednesday -Man committed for Sentence
Henry Richard Rankin was charged with the larceny of £180 worth of jewellery.

THE JEWELLERY RAIDS
During the past fortnight public interest has centred in the charges preferred against six men who were arrested as a result of enquiries on July 17 by Detective McMahon and Plainclothes Constables T. Correll and R. Gill.

For some time, Mr. D.H. McDougall, of Gouger Street, Adelaide, had been missing from his stock large quantities of jewellery, which he valued at about £1,000, and his suspicious having been aroused, he placed the matter in the hands of the authorities.

The police officers are considered to have fulfilled their duty in a most creditable manner, as the charges against six men have all been sustained.  This has been one of the most sensational cases in the history of the State, and the sentences imposed up on the offenders have been :-  Eric Charles Rankin (unlawful possession), 12 months imprisonment  Alan Ernest Rankin (unlawful possession, 12 months:  Leslie Garnet Jolly (unlawful possession, three months;  James Malone (unlawful possession), six months;  and Headley John Stutley (unlawful possession), 18 months.  Henry Richard Rankin, who had been employed as a bookkeeper and salesman in Mr. McDougall’s establishment, has been committed for trial on a charge of larceny.

LAW COURTS
SUPREME COURT – CRIMINAL SITTINGS  Tuesday, September 7 (Before the Chief Justice (Sir George Murray) and jurors)
Larceny

Henry Richard Rankin (41) who admitted two charges of larceny, was brought up for sentence.  Mr. F.G. Hicks, who represented the accused, asked his Honor to deal leniently with the accused.  He mentioned that Rankin had been manager of a jewellery establishment in the Central Market, and when charged with having stolen articles belonging to his employer he said to the detective – “I have been a fool and have been expecting this.”  He was sincerely contrite for his lapse.  He had an ailing wife and an invalid child.

Evidence concerning the previous good character of the accused was tendered by several witnesses.

His Honor said the accused, since July 19, had stolen many different articles from Mr. McDougall’s shop.  Each article taken contributed a separate offence.  He had abused a position of trust.

The sentence would be 18 months hard labor on each of the two charges.  The sentences would be concurrent.

1920 – Jewellery Robbery

SIX MEN CHARGED
ROBBERY OF JEWELLERY – TWO ACCUSED MEN GAOLED – FOUR  MEN CHARGED WITH OFFENCES, ADELAIDE, Wednesday

In the Adelaide Police Court today charges were heard against four men arrested in connection with a robbery of jewellery from McDougall’s, in Gouger Street, Adelaide.
Alan Ernest Rankin denied that he had been unlawfully in possession of a quantity of jewellery.

Mr. Alderman, who prosecuted, said that Mc. McDougall had missed a large quantity of jewellery from his shop, of which the accused’s brother (Henry Richard Rankin) was in charge.  Detective McMahon had said to the accused : “We have seen you about the shop often and we have good reason to believe that you have received a lot of the jewellery.  We want you to come with us while we have a look at your house.”  The accused admitted that he had some of the articles.  He said : “Well, I have got a few things which I bought from Dick for my wife.”

Mr. Hicks for the defence, said it was clear to him that the accused, hearing that his brother had been arrested on a charge of larceny, had attempted to shield him.

The accused said that some time ago, he handed to a man named Jolly a ring, watch chain, wristlet watch and bangle.  Jolly had paid for all the goods excepting the ring, and he had handed the money to his brother, Dick.  He bought the bangle from his brother for £2 and a gold photo pendant for 12/6d.  He did not know that any of the goods were obtained unlawfully.
In reply to Mr. Alderman, the accused said that after he had sold several articles to Jolly he became suspicious.  He only received 5/-d. out of the deals.

The accused was imprisoned for 12 months.
