A pretty wedding was performed at the Methodist Church, Smithton, on Wednesday evening, the contracting parties being Mr. Walter Winslade and Miss Pearl Lilian Ward, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester J. Ward, of Smithton. The officiating minister was the Rev. R. B. McConachie, of Wynyard, assisted by the Rev. W. Hooper, of Smithton. The bridegroom was attended as best man by Mr. C. Mulligan, whilst Miss Eileen Pithouse was bridesmaid. As the bride entered the church the choir sang the hymn, 'The Voice That Breathed O'er Eden. Mr. H. V. Richards played ''The Wedding March" as the happy couple was leaving the church amidst showers of confetti and rice. On repairing to the home of the bride's parents, where a sumptuous wedding breakfast was laid out, the usual toasts were announced and honored in right royal style. The wedding presents, which were laid out for the guests' inspection, were varied and numerous.Source : North Western Advocate and the Emu Bay Times , Monday 19 August 1918

Richard Burdett Salisbury - His Early Life
Birth
Where and when was Richard Salisbury born??
The birth certificate for his first child, Mary Burdett Salisbury, of which he was the informant, stated his birth place as Lancaster. His death certificate which named his informant as J.Salisbury, who was possibly related to Richard, stated his birth place as Wales.
Relationships
Another mystery surrounding Richard is whether the family of Salisbury's who lived in Melbourne was related to Richard. It certainly seems possible, as one of the family, J.Salisbury (presumably John) was the informant on Richard's death certificate. However, I feel he may have stated Richard's country of origin incorrectly.
Also, Richard was buried in the same grave at Melbourne General Cemetery as several of this family - namely -
- David and John Salisbury, aged 1 month in 1849,
- James Salisbury, aged 3 years in 1854,
- Joseph Salisbury, 7 months in 1878,
- Mary Salisbury, 24 years in 1878 and and
- John Salisbury, aged 29 years in 1886.
1841 - Arrival into Australia
The only potentially relevant record I have found so far (2023) for Richard Salisbury's arrival into Australia is an 1841 shipping record - Assisted Immigrants, PRO, which shows a Richard Salisbury arriving as 3rd Mate on the ship "Intrinisic". Richard would have been about 19 years old. Is this him??

We do know that by 1850, Richard had travelled down to Tasmania, where he met his future wife - Susan House.
Susan House - Her Early Life
The House family can be traced back several generations where before their arrival at Stanley, Tasmania, they mostly lived in Frampton
Cotterell in Gloucestershire.
Cotterell in Gloucestershire.
1833 - Birth
Susan House was born in 1833 and was baptised on December 1 in 1833 in Gloucestershire. Her father was a farm labourer. The entry in the Baptism Register is second from the top.

1841 - Emigration to Australia
Susan's father, John Stagg House arrived into Melbourne on board the "Ward Chapman", with his wife, Eliza Turner and four children in 1841, including little eight year old Susan. The family departed Bristol in August that year. Not long after their arrival in Melbourne, their fifth child was born - Jonathan Stagg House, on January 15 in 1842. The little family then travelled by the "Gem" from Melbourne to Hobart and thence to Stanley where they decided to settle.
Stanley, Tasmania
It was a very raw life in Stanley at the time, the little township having been established only a short time before. It was not until 1842 that John Lee-Archer was commissioned to draw up a formal plan for the town. In 1848 when Susan was 15 years old, the population of Stanley was listed as 127 men, 41 women and 65 children.
During the years 1841 - 1851, John Lee-Archer, former Chief Colonial Architect, was appointed as Circular Head's Police Magistrate, a post he held until about 1852.
The buildings existing during this time included about 20 shops and stores -
- VDLCo Store (Van Dieman's Land Company)
- Plough Inn
- Commercial Hotel
- Bayview Hotel
- Touchwood House
- The Parsonage
- Anglican Church
- Catholic Church - the first Catholic church was built in 1850 whilst in 1849 the first priest, Fr. Michael Burke arrived. The church was 'Star of the Sea'
- School
- Post office
Nothing else is known of Susan's life as a young girl in Stanley.
Richard Burdett Salisbury and Susan House - Their Life Together
Richard had made his way from Melbourne down to Tasmania and then to Stanley where he may have been a teacher or perhaps worked in one of the hotels in the town. It is not clear when this occurred , other than he was in Stanley prior to 1850 when he married Susan House.
1850 - Marriage
On March 3 in 1850, seventeen year-old Susan married twenty-eight-year-old Richard Salisbury at St. Paul's Church, Horton in Tasmania.
Richard was not using the additional name of 'Burdett' nor of 'Albert' as he did so in later documents. He described himself as a Schoolmaster. I have not been able to find any evidence of where he may have taught. Susan did not provide her occupation as it most likely she worked at home in the house or on her father's farm.
Witnesses to marriage were Susan's older sister, Ellen House and Peter Smith.

1851 - Residence
Lived at Circular Head, Tasmania
1851 - Birth of Daughter - Mary Burdett Salisbury
Their first child and daughter, Mary Burdett Salisbury, born Tasmania on February 24, 1851. Richard was the informant and gave his birth place as Lancashire. He also gave his age at 32 years and the name 'Burdett' first appears in the records, as does 'Albert' - Richard Albert Salisbury. His occupation was again given as 'Schoolmaster'.

1851 - Birth Register - Mary Burdett Salisbury
1851-53 - Travel to Melbourne, Victoria
Richard and Susan Salisbury and their baby daughter travelled from Tasmania to Melbourne sometime between the birth of their first child and 1853.
1853 - Occupation and Residence - Crown Hotel
Richard was the hotel-keeper at the Crown Hotel, aged 32 years. The Hotel was on the south-east corner of Lonsdale & Queen Streets, Melbourne. The hotel is no longer standing.

1853 - Crown Hotel stands on the right at the corner of Lonsdale and Queen Streets, Melbourne
1853 - Birth of Daughter
September 2, 1853, Ellen Salisbury was born at Crown Hotel, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Richard signed the registration entry as the informant and signed - R.B. Salisbury, B.A. The second initial in Richard's name presumably stands for "Burdett", but what do the initials B,.A. stand for? Bachelor of Arts??
He also gave his place of birth as Lancashire, England. His age was recorded as 32 years. His marriage to Susan was given as happening in 1849 in Circular Head. It should have read 1850.

1853 - Birth Register - Ellen Salisbury
1854, March 30 - False Imprisonment
GRAHAM V SALISBURYIn the Melbourne Supreme Court, there was a motion brought for false imprisonment against the landlord of the Crown Hotel and £500 damages were recoverable. Agent for the defendant contended that his client had never been serviced with notice of action.
1855 - October 6 - Police City Court

Crown Hotel - Events
During the course of Richard's involvement at the Crown Hotel as publican, several events and incidents took place indicating that the hotel was a lively and popular meeting place. These included -
- 1851 - Revision court held re electoral roll
- 1851 - Murder! The barman at the Crown Hotel sworn in court that he saw the accused McBean and two other men in the bar of the Crown Hotel,. They had been drinking for about two hours there. William McBean and his friend Thomas Smith were accused of murdering William Gornley later that evening. After a lengthy trial, the jury returned the verdict that 'they found against William McBean, that he had stabbed the deceased William Gornley with a sharp cutting instrument.'
- 1852 - Theft. A young Scotchman, Mr. McPherson, recently arrived in the colony excited the attention of three men who were standing near the Crown Hotel with his gold watch chain.
- 1852 - Convict captured. Thomas Shepherd, an escaped convict was captured at the Crown Hotel. He had previously been transported for life. As the evidence against him was rather contradictory, the prisoner was remanded for two or three days.
- 1852 - Marriage between a Robert Livingstone and Catherine Waters
- 1853 - Meetings held to elect Councillors on the Town Council for Bourke Ward
- 1855 - Domestic violence - Bridget Gallagher was charged by a constable for cruelly beating her child, a little girl of ten years in Lonsdale Street, near the Crown Hotel. Bridget said she had sent the child to a grocer's but that the girl had loitered upon the way. She apologised to the Judge and said she would never do it again - she was discharged.
1854 - 1856 - Cavan Hotel, Melbourne
The Cavan Hotel had opened on December 13, 1853 when a new licence was granted to Thomas Stephen. Richard Salisbury came to take over the Cavan Hotel as a result of the previous licencee, Frederick Stephens, filing for insolvency. Stephens had taken on the hotel at a "ruinous rent" and by November 1855 was unable to meet his debts. Stephens cited high rent, depreciation and losses in trade as being his undoing. His deficiency was £1,124.
Between 1854 and 1856, Richard took over the Cavan Hotel and the family moved from the Crown Hotel in Lonsdale Street to the Cavan Hotel, 44 Queensberry Street, Carlton where Richard was the registered publican. This hotel which was close to the public gardens surrounding the Exhibition Buildings. Richard was on the Electoral Roll in the University Division.
Whiteside McWhinney lived very near to this hotel and was employed as a clerk at 66 Collins Street, Melbourne at a salary of £100 per year with Ray & Co. (After Richard'[s death in 1867, his wife, Susan would marry Whiteside McWhinney.)
1856 - Electoral Roll
Richard was listed on the electoral roll as residing at the Cavan Hotel, Queensberry Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Occupation - Publican
1856 - Birth of Son, William Burdett Salisbury
William Burdett Salisbury was born at the Cavan Hotel, 44 Queensberry Street, Carlton

1857 - Publican License
In May, 1857, at the City of Melbourne Annual Licencing Session when Richard Salisbury applied to renew his licence, his application was "postponed with a caution". This may have resulted from filthy conditions, or permitting fighting in the hotel, or allowing prostitutes to frequent and solicit. These are some of the reasons given for other application postponements, but exactly why in Richard Salisbury's case, was not disclosed. Richard obviously resolved the problems and his application was approved on May 6 of 1857.

1857 - Death of Richard Salisbury
Richard appeared to be doing reasonably well at the Cavan Hotel, but a simple accident led to his sudden and unexpected death in 1857.
Richard died at the Cavan Hotel of excessive haemorrhage as a result of Tetanus on November 24. He was 36 years old. His occupation was Victualler. He left his wife Susan, 24 years old and three small children, the youngest being just 2 years old.

1857 - Death Notice
Age newspaper, Wednesday, 25 November 1857
DIED -On the 24th November at the Cavan Hotel, Queensberry Street, North Melbourne, Mr. Richard Burdett Salisbury (native of Anglesea, Wales) aged 36 years.Much respectedLeaving a wife and three children to deplore his loss
Did the 'J. Salisbury' who was the informant on the death certificate arrange for the newspaper notice and therefore include Wales as Richard's birthplace?
1857 - Burial
The day after his death on November 25, Richard was buried at the New Cemetery, Melbourne (Melbourne General Cemetery). The cemetery was opened in 1853 and was known as the New Melbourne Cemetery. The old cemetery had been located on the Queen Victoria Market site and was closed. Remains were removed to the new site. Richard was buried in plot RC. P.74 with many other people named Salisbury (relations??) These burials at the New Melbourne (Melbourne General) Cemetery in Melbourne were recorded as -
Name Age Date of Burial Compartment/Section Row Grave
- Salisbury, James 3 years 1854, August 2 RC P 74
- Salisbury, John 29 years 1886, March 23 RC P 74
- Salisbury, Joseph H. 7 months 1878, March 15 RC P 74
- Salisbury, Margaret 64 years 1880, October 27 RC P 74
- Salisbury, Mary 24 years 1879, May 20 RC P 74
- Salisbury, Richard B. 36 years 1857, November 25 RC P 74
Was the John Salisbury who died in 1886 the same J. Salisbury who was the informant on Richard's death certificate. I believe the James, Mary and John Salisbury in the above list were children of John and Margaret Salisbury (nee Gardiner) - Margaret is also in the above list. More work here may resolve the place of Richard's birth and also his ancestry.
Susan House's Life after the Death of her Husband, Richard Burdett Salisbury
1857 - Cavan Hotel Licence
Susan couldn't take over the publican licence, so the hotel license or publican's license for the Cavan Hotel was transferred from R.B. Salisbury to Thomas Condon on December 1, 1857.
This left Susan and her children with nowhere to live. Enter Whiteside McWhinney. He was born in about 1833 in Ireland. His father was Arthur McWhinney and his mother is given as 'Burnett' - her first or last name?
