Brenton James Felstead served in the Australian Airforce and was stationed in Malaysia where the first two of their children were born at Malaipia, Malaysia. The remaining children were born in Perth, Western Australia

Gladys left school at 13 years of age and helped her father with fishing and building his boats. She once sailed from Port Vincent to Coobowie by herself in her own 14-foot sail-boat.

Gladys’ husband, Frederick Edward Smidth was a Norwegian and was a kind man. He was a seaman and worked on ships for over 25 years – with Coast Steamships Ltd. for over 8 years and also with the Adelaide Steamship Company.

During the wars, he served on many Australian Naval ships, including the Warawee, Kooraka, Karratta, Kapoola, Minippa and was on board the Kapara when it was sunk during WW2.
