1915 - Birth of DaughterAnd after much searching, I found Emily West, 14 years, living as a lodger with a widow, Ann Bowskill, 79 years in Central Street, Clifton.
My mother, Iris Warren, nee Ford, told me that Emily West had 'fallen for' a man called Charles Frederick Black and as a result, she gave birth to a daughter, named Irene May West. Emily and her daughter were supported by her family during this time
1915 - Charles Black to Australia
The father of Emily's daughter, Charles Frederick Black, apparently decided to avoid family entanglements, and took himself to Australia.
There, on September 17 in 1915, he enlisted in the Australian Army. He gave his age as 39 years and his occupation as Ship's Steward. His father was listed as Charles Black of 8 Victoria Embankment, Darlington, England. He stated that he was not married.
However, on October 18 in 1915 he was discharged because he had been convicted by a Civil Court for larceny of Government property.
The Chief Instructor of the Signals School, A.I.F., considered that there were mitigating circumstances in Pte. Black's case and it was desired to retain his services. So, Pte. Black applied again, acknowledging his previous discharge, on October 20, 1915 and was appointed as a Driver with the 3rd Division Signal Company, A.I.F.
He was transferred to London to continue his duty and was then finally discharged from duty with the A.I.F. on August 25, 1919 in London.
