1870 – Inquest into Death of Ellen Launder, nee Farmer
Statement by William LaunderThe body of Ellen Launder now lying in the adjoining room is my wife.I last saw her alone about 9 o’clock A.M. on the 1st of October. She shortly before took ill. I then sent for Mr. Elliott who on seeing her gave some medicine and used other restorations. She was then conscious and expressed a wish that what she had taken might do her good. She did not appear to suffer any pain.Immediately after she appeared to fall into a doze. She generally appeared healthy and after the lapse of a few minutes I observed a change in her features and again sent for Mr. Elliott who on seeing her pronounced life extinct.Statement by Henry ElliottI know the body now lying in the adjoining room as Ellen Launder. She is the wife of William Launder employed by me as stockman. I saw her alive and well about 9 o’clock on 1st of October. Shortly after that hour I was requested to see her as she had become suddenly taken ill. I assisted her husband to lay her on the bed. I then administered about half tea spoonful of sal volatile in a wine glass-full of …… and applying other restorations, she was then conscious and expressed a hope that what she had taken would do her good. I then left the room.About five minutes afterwards, her husband sent for me and upon again seeing her she appeared to be dead, felt for the pulse, found life was extinct. The features were calm. The body in a natural position. I did not see any mark of violence evident about the body. I believe her to be a temperate woman during the time I have known her. Dutton, Sect. of LandsDated October 30, 1885Sir,I respectfully beg to ask your consideration of my case in which Mr. McLean at Ipswich Land Court has refused to grant my certificate for my selection on Dugandan on the ground that I have not continually resided on the selection and that the bailiff Mr. Blains did not find me on the selection when he inspected it.I have not been able to do more than live on the place from time to time when there was water - which for the last 3 years has been very uncertain. There has not been a drought in the last eight months. My improvements are all made as required by the act. I have a dam made that will hold plenty of water as soon as rain comes. My witness will testify that I have occupied the land whenever I was able.Trusting you will grant me relief,I am sir,Your obed servantWlm. J. Launderaddress -Post OfficeUndullavia Ipswich
