William Henry (aka Bill) Warren & Florence Mabel Maywald – Their Lives
1881 – Birth – William Henry Warren
William, known as Bill Warren, was born in Happy Valley in 1881 to Oliver and Elizabeth Warren, nee Hales. A couple of years after his birth he was bounced along rough roads behind a jinker, or some other form of horse or bullock drawn transport. He was on the way to Kaniva with his parents and siblings where his father, Oliver had decided his luck would change and they would make good as farmer settlers.

1882 – Birth – Florence Mabel Maywald
Florence Mabel Maywald was born in 1882 in Jamestown, South Australia and was one of 12 children. Her parents were Johann Traugott Maywald (born December 28, 1842 in Ransen in East Germany) and Ann Eliza Valentia Niquet.

Ancestry of Florence Mabel Maywald
Florence’s paternal great-grandfather was George F Maywald of Germany. His son – Florence’s grandfather - was Carl Gottlieb Maywald, born June 11, 1809 in Ransen (now Reszow) on the River Oder in Silesia (now Rzenszyn, Poland). He died December 13, 1889 near Nuriootpa, South Australia.
Florence’s grandfather, Carl, married three times – first to Johanna Helene Bartsch (1801-1855) in Germany 1829 then to Christiana Dorothea Friederica Hoff (1834-1864) in Langmell, South Australia in 1856 and finally to Maria Schenalze (1811-1881) in 1867 in Light Pass, South Australia.
Carl Gottlob Maywald was a carpenter. He and his family migrated to Bethany in SA on the ship “George Washington” arriving in 1844. The family fled the religious persecution Lutherans faced in their homeland.
Carl was naturalised in 1847. The family later moved to Light Pass where Carl purchased a farming property – Block 199, Hundred of Belvidere – which they proceeded to build into a farm and vineyard. The farmhouse was built of wattle and daub and later, a separate kitchen and bedrooms were added. Some of the floors were packed clay.
The house stood till about 1982 when it was demolished. The garden was extensive with roses growing over the picket gate and geraniums and hollyhocks among the roses. Almond trees grew along two side of the house block and several bay trees grew in the garden. Huge pepper trees cast shade on parts of the house. Carl married Johanna Helene Bartsch in Germany and lived in South Australia with her until her death on July 3, 1855.
2 Carl Friedrich Maywald (1841-1921) He married Maria Rosina Wirsing.
From the union of Johann Traugott Maywald and Annie Eliza Niquet were born –
1. Alma Maywald (1869 - )
2. Annie Elizabeth Maywald (1870 – 1942). She married Herbert Roberts (1868 – 1937), son of Frank Wellesley Roberts and Elizabeth Doble.
3. Johann Carl Maywald (1871 – 1940). He married Edith Anna Thompson, daughter of Joseph Thompson.
4. Edith Wilhelmine Maywald (1873 – 1874)
5. Alice Louisa Victoria Maywald (1875 – 1938). She married William Thompson, son of Joseph Thompson, then James Roberts, son of Frank Wellesley Roberts.
6. Peter Henry Maywald (1877 – 1878)
7. Ethel May Maywald (1878 – 1958) She married Hedley Louise Roberts, son of Frank Wellesley Roberts.
10. Eva Elsie Maywald (1885 – 1953) She married Henry George Thompson, son of Joseph Thompson.
11. Eliza Maywald (1887 – 1888)
12. Margaret Helena Maywald (1887 – 1888)
A newspaper article which appeared in a South Australian newspaper in 1888 tells some of the story of Florence’s father, Johann Traugott Maywald’s death. He was killed in an accident on December 30, 1887, whilst in the employ of Messrs. Mellor Brothers, of Jamestown. Johann was kicked in the stomach by a horse whilst he was working for Mellor Bros as a blacksmith in Jamestown. He was shoeing a restive horse which was struggling. It kicked and threw Johann violently to the ground where he suffered injuries to the stomach and intestines.
At the time, his wife, Annie Eliza was in delicate health and the shock of the accident had the worst possible affect. Their family numbered nine at the time, the eldest of whom was about 18 and the two youngest just a week old. To help, neighbours took the newly born twin girls and some of the other children went to stay with other neighbours and relatives.
Johann died from his injuries on January 5, 1888 and his funeral was held on the following day, attended by a large group of family and friends as Johann was one of the pioneer residents of the town.
The cause of his death was rupture of the intestines, causing peritonitis. As his wife, Anne was still in a critical condition, they carried Johann’s coffin out the window so that she could not see it as she was very ill from shock and milk fever. Her twin girls died a short time later.
Another article was not very supportive of the difficulty faced by Annie Eliza and her children.
1888 - AN APPEAL FOR HELP. TO THE EDITOR
Sir — A letter under the above heading, signed by 'S. Gully,' Appeals in your issue of Monday last, which needs a little explanation. The letter makes the bald statement that ' J. T. Maywald met with an accident on December 30, 1887, whilst in the employ of Messrs. Mellor Brothers, of Jamestown, and died on January 5, 1888 leaving a widow and nine children quite unprovided for.' The poor woman was confined of twins only a few days before this sad accident. Now, while the circumstances related in that statement are true in fact, they are not true by inference, as Mr. Gully must know, or, at any rate, his informant must have known. Any person would infer that this very sad case had drawn out but little aid or sympathy from the neighbours living in Jamestown, and that Mrs. Maywald is still left with the care of nine children, including twin babes unprovided for, and that she is still living in Jamestown.I was living next door to Maywald when he met with the accident which hastened his death, and can testify that both as regards Mr. and Mrs. Maywald unremitting care and attention were bestowed upon them in their affliction, If any mistake was made there were too many helpers vying with each other to soothe their sad lot. The twins were taken by neighbours and nursed, and the other small children cared for during Mrs, Maywald's illness. Now, as to Mrs. Maywald being left with nine children quite unprovided for, I would ask Mr. Gully if he does not know that the two eldest are old enough to earn their living ; also that the twins are both dead, and that the friends have taken either two or three others of the family? Is it not also a fact that apart from the assistance rendered by Mr. Stephen (Mellor Bros, manager) and others in Jamestown in clothing and feeding the children while they remained in Jamestown (for they left here some months ago), Mrs. Maywald received £20 from the Accident Association, and that Mellor Brothers have supplemented this with another £20 promise?ls it not also a fact that Mrs. Maywald's mother is in receipt of an income of £5 or £6 per week and is well able to render more assistance than she appears to have done so far. I have no wish to injure Mrs. Maywald's cause, but I object to a statement being placed before a 'generous public' which conceals from them the very facts they should know; and in this case I think if the mother, who is a strong woman, helps herself, and her own relatives do their duly, the public will not require to do much more than they have done.I am, &c., JAMES WILKINSON. Jamestown, May 17, 18881888 - "South Australian Weekly Chronicle (Adelaide, SA)", 26 May 1888
After Johann Traugott Maywald’s death in 1888, Annie married Herbert Roberts (son of Frank Wellesly Roberts. Her sister Olive Maud Maywald and Herbert’s father, Hedley Louise Roberts, were witnesses. It was a double wedding as Annie’s sister, Alice, married Herbert’s brother, Jim. Annie Eliza, nee Niquet, Maywald, Roberts, died on August 27, 1942 whilst her second husband, Herbert, born June 27, 1868, died February 23, 1937.
Note - Information on the Maywald family was gathered from many sources, including a very detailed and informative site - https://webarchive.nla.gov.au/awa/20150227071407/http://piriemaywald.com/familytrees/Maywalds-in-Australia.pdf
It is no wonder I had so much trouble sorting out who was who in this family! In Florence Mabel Maywald’s family, three of her siblings married siblings from the family of Joseph Thompson, two married siblings from the family of Frank Wellesley Roberts; one married her first cousin from the family of her father’s brother (Carl Friedrich Maywald); four died too young to marry; only two, including Florence, married outside of these families. And to add further confusion, Anne Eliza, nee Niquet (widow of Johann Traugott Maywald) married another of the sons of Frank Wellesley Roberts after Johann’s death in 1888.
The photo below sourced from The State Library of South Australia, shows a collection of storekeepers at Yorketown about 1902. Pictured in the middle of the group is Jack Maywald, (the man in the white apron and hat), whom I think may be the third child of Johann Traugott Malwald and Annie Eliza, nee Niquet.

Just as a matter of interest, to demonstrate how tough life was for the early settlers, a newspaper report of 1941 details the life of a Wilhelm Maywald, another son of Carl Maywald. He was a carpenter, who died at the age of 81 years.
1941 – Wilhelm Maywald - Obituary
Death of Pioneer Craftsman W. Maywald, 82; Lost Fingers in Accident When 20Veteran Nuriootpa carpenter and builder, Mr Wilhelm Maywald, 82, died on Monday. He was a son of Mr and Mrs Carl Maywald, pioneer settlers who later made a home at Klemzig, from where Mr Maywald senior used to walk to Bethany each week to help with erection of the first church there in 1845. The family afterwards moved to Tanunda, then took up virgin land between Nuriootpa and Stockwell, where their son, Friedrich Wilhelm, was born on May 2, 1859. He was educated by Teacher Andresen at Tanunda, and later joined his father and brother at the trade.Mr Maywald later went to Messrs (Graefe & Hilbig's coach and implement factory at Dimchurch, then employing 20 men and producing also strippers and farm machinery. At 22, Mr Maywald became Nuriootpa's carpenter and builder and married Miss I.ouise l.offler, of Stockwell, who died in 1930. Thereafter he went to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs S. Maywald in the old home where he was born.He was deservedly honoured in 1939 when he celebrated his 80th birthday: each of his four sons making very appropriate speeches which deeply touched him, whilst he was very proud of the birthday cake made by his granddaughter, Elsie. His story is one of triumph over extreme disability, for when he was 20, his right hand got caught in a planing machine and he lost four lingers, some at the first joint and some at the second. The damaged fingers were amputated with sheep shears. In spite of the handicap he achieved success and gained praise among other things for his delicate cabinet work that had not been touched by sandpaper or putty. He retired some years ago but was never idle around the home. His family of four sons and one daughter- Alfred and Arthur, Will and Selvanus, Nuriootpa; and Louise (Mrs Grand), Adelaide. There are 25 grandrchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.The affectionate care given Mr Maywald in his declining years by his daughter-in-law, Mrs S. Maywald. brought him happiness and contentment, and he readily acknowledged the services so willingly given. There was a large attendance at his funeral and a host of beautiful floral tributes.1941, Obituary, "Leader (Angaston, SA)", 25 Sep 1941
Florence’s maternal grandfather, Johannes Pieter Niquet
He was also known as John Peter Niquet, and he was born on December 21 in 1811 in Charlottenburg in Prussia.
Johannes was descended from an 'old French family of noble extraction,' who, having become Huguenots, fled their country to escape religious persecution. One branch of the family sought refuge in Germany and another in America.
Once in Australia, John Peter Niquet became a Lutheran Minister and went to Queensland as a missionary where he remained working for the next 18 years. During that time, he married Annie Eliza Noble in 1846 at the age of 34.
Johannes Pieter Niquet and Annie Eliza Noble had these children –
1. Ann Eliza Valentia Niquet (1847 Q’land) - )
2. Charles A William Niquet (1850 Brisbane, Q’d - )
3. Theophilus Alexander Niquet (1852 Q’land - )
4. Charles Alexander Wesley Niquet (1854 Q’land - )
5. Olivia Eleanor A. Niquet (C1862 Ballarat, Vic - )
6. Eleanor Eliza Niquet (C1864 Ballarat, Vic - )
7. Edith Louise Marie Niquet (1866 Light Pass, SA - )
8. Peter Niquet
9. Johanna Margarete Niquet
10. Emma Caroline Niquet
In 1855, after John Peter Niquet’s stint in Queensland, he travelled with his family to Ballarat in Victoria where he was pastor of a Lutheran Church for nine years. He then settled in Light’s Pass, near Angaston in South Australia where he was a minister for 23 years.
It appears he was much loved by his family, community, and church members. He died on March 3, 1903 after being struck down with some sort of paralysis, possibly a stoke, at the age of 91 years in Mt. Gambier, where was buried. His wife, Annie Eliza predeceased him, having died in 1893.

Florence's grandfather, John Peter Niquet died on March 30, 1903 at Mount Gambier where he lived. He was 91 years old. The following obituary appeared in the local newspaper.
A PIONEER AUSTRALIAN MISSIONARYThe Kev. John Peter Niquet, one of the oldest Lutheran ministers in Australia, who had lived at Mount Gambier for the last nine years with his son-in-law, the Rev, F. W. Matehoss, died lately at the age of 91 years. During nearly the whole of his long life the deceased enjoyed a remarkable measure of health, but about a year ago he was stricken with paralysis, which greatly weakened him, and a recurrence of the seizure a few days ago caused his death.Pastor Niquet was born in Berlin, Prussia in December 1811. He was descended from an 'old French family of noble extraction,' who, having become Huguenots, fled from their country at the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. One branch of the family sought refuge in Germany and the other in America. The deceased was educated in a Berlin theological college under the late Dr. Gosner. In 1837, when 26 years of age, he was sent out to Queensland with five others as pioneer missionaries to the aborigines of that colony, and for 18 years was engaged in that work. During that 18 years he got married. In 1855 he went to Ballarat, and for nine years was pastor of a Lutheran Church there. Then he settled (1864) in charge of the Lutheran Church at Light's Pass, near Angaston, South Australia, where he laboured for 23 years, and was much beloved of the people. For two years or so he had charge of the Pirie Street Lutheran Church.Rev. John Peter Niquet
