Notes from Mary Ashley, dated October 2003
Ernest Arthur Launder was my mother's father. As a young man he watched the lamp-lighter doing his evening rounds to ignite the gas street lamps, returning in the morning to extinguish them.He attended King Street, Melbourne State School and in his teens played cricket and football for North Melbourne. In 1901, Ernest married Ellen Mary Ursula Gissane and they lived at 14 Carroll Street, North Melbourne. For the first few years of his married life.
Ernest owned a 4-wheeled pony-drawn turnout known as a 'Phaeton": He kept it stabled in a quiet corner of the Meat Market building and on weekends, he would take his wife, Nellie, and children for jaunts. When his father, Thomas Howard Launder died in 1917, Ernest and his wife and children moved into the fascinating and rambling residence in Blackwood Street that was part of the market building.Ernest was a very generous husband and father, handing in an unopened pay packet every week of his working life to his wife. If he needed spending money, he would always work extra hours at his second job - skinning carcasses. For many years he followed the North Melbourne football club and attended race meetings,. The longest trip he ever undertook was to travel to Warrnambool for a two-day race meeting, travelling there on board the vessel "Casino" and returning by train. The ship "Casino" was wrecked off Apollo Bay inm 1932.Ernest died on Good Friday, April 15 in 1963 after a three-week illness of renal failure.
