1944 – Obituary for Harry Skene

OBITUARY – MR. H. SKENE
The remains of the late Mr. Henry Skene, of Northumberland Road, were interred at Boroondara Cemetery, Kew on Thursday last.  The deceased gentleman, who was 70 years of age, had lived in this district for about 20 years.  Unknown, perhaps, as widely as his kindly, cheerful disposition seemed to deserve, Mr. Skene had many friends here, and none of these could well be surprised at seeing so large a concourse at the funeral.

He came of a Scottish ancestry distinguished by achievements of honour and talent.  In earlier years, Mr. and Mrs. Skene were bereft of three sons.  The only one surviving, Noel, is well known, and cordially esteemed among us.  To him, and to his widowed mother, we offer our sympathy.  The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Walter A. Warne, and at the chapel and graveside, services were conducted by the Rev. W. Evans, minister of the Sunshine Presbyterian Church.

KITCHEN TEA
On Thursday evening of last week in the Sunshine Town Hall, the Young Men's Club of Nettlefold's Pty. Ltd., gave a kitchen tea to Mr. Noel Skene in honour of his forthcoming marriage.
Judging by the guests assembled its popularity will become somewhat enhanced by the effort afforded to Mr. Skene.

These young men certainly have an eye for the future, each one as they accept their added responsibilities are given one of these kitchen teas. Mr. Skene is evidently held in very high esteem by the number of gifts he received, they certainly looked a very useful lot and should prove a wonderful asset in the commencement of home building.

1945 – Noel Skene Musical Evenings

WITH THE DIGGERS
The Sunshine Branch R.S.S.A. I.L.A. Ladies' Auxiliary paid another visit to Caulfield Hospital on Wednesday last, June 27.

Cigarettes and fruit were distributed amongst the patients, and a very pleasant evening's entertainment was provided by artists who generously gave their services to this effort, and their help was greatly appreciated.

Song and Dance - Miss Lorraine and Miss Norma Gum proved a great success.
Songs rendered by Mrs. Hand and Mr. J. Hartley were of good quality and were well received by patients and staff.

Mr. Noel Skene took along his music box and gave them all they asked.

Mrs. Mary Lowe had charge of the piano and played in her usual capable manner.

Members of the branch who went along expressed their appreciation to the ladies of the auxiliary for the splendid work they do visiting these hospitals and caring for the sick and wounded servicemen.

SUNSHINE COURT EJECTMENT CASES - FILTHY CONDITIONS ALLEGED

In the first case, in which Vernon McDonald sought to have Noel Skene ejected from a house in Northumberland Rd., Sunshine, allegations were made that the tenant had abused the property. Grounds for ejectment were that the house was in a filthy condition, there were considerable arrears of rent and the owner was suffering hardship through having to live at Camp Pell.

The respondent was unable to appear in Court, as his motor truck had broken down at Ararat, but his wife appeared on his behalf.
An order for ejectment was made with a stay of four weeks.
