1890 - Intruder - A Rogue and Vagabond
THREE MONTHS HARD LABOUR - A STRONG ABLE-BODIED LOAFER - HE DESERVES HORSE-WHIPPINGHe was a strong and healthy looking man of about 35 years, with a hang-dog expression on his face and shifty, lack-lustre eye, and as he slouched up to the Bench on Thursday last, Sergeant Rutledge told Mr. O'Meara, P.M. that the charge against him was one of being a rogue and vagabond.Mrs. Jane Douglas, residing in Nicholson Street, Footscray, deposed that on the previous Wednesday evening at about quarter past ten she found the prisoner, George Harrington in a shed in the back yard. The shed was used as a storeroom and contained several sets of harness together with other articles of portable property of more or less value. She left a couple of dogs to watch him and called her husband and sons. One of the boys then went for a policeman and returned with Senior-Constable Moore to whom Harrington was given in charge. This evidence was corroborated by a son of Mrs. Douglas who supplemented it by saying that when interrogated before his arrest, prisoner stated that he had gone into the shed to rest.
1895 - Fowl Play!Mr. O'Meara - Do you wish to ask witness any questions?Harrington - N. I do not remember seeing him. I was slightly intoxicated.Mr. O'Meara - Was he sober?Witness - He didn't look drunk.Senior-Constable stated that the prisoner was given in charge under the circumstances mentioned. When first questioned he said that he thought he was going into the rear of Connoly's Hotel at about half seven to get out of the rain. The hotel however was fully a quarter of a mile away and very little rain fell till later in the evening.Prisoner was generally loafing about public houses and had not done any work for a long time. He was a labourer.Mr. O'Meara - Are there any previous convictions?Sergeant Rutledge - Yes, your Worship on the 12th December, 1889, he got one month's imprisonment for larceny. He is a strong able-bodied man and deserves no sympathy. He won't work. A whipping is what he wants.Mr. O'Meara - Have you anything to say?Prisoner - I went in there to get out of the rain about seven o'clock.Mr. O'Meara - But when you were found it was a quarter past ten.Prisoner - Well, I fell asleep there.Mr. O'Meara - You are sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour.Source : The Independent newspaper, Footscray, September 13, 1890
It was reported that about 45 fowls of various colours and breeds were stolen from an open shed in the yard of Mr. David Douglas, Nicholson Street, Footscray during the night of the 21st.Some of the fowls were found a day or two afterwards in the possession of a man named Norris, who had been arrested at North Melbourne and who was charged with the offence.Source : The Advertiser newspaper, March 30, 1895

1913 - Obituary - David Douglas
1913 - Wills and EstatesOBITUARY - DOUGLASThe district lost one of its oldest residents on Tuesday, in the person of David Douglas of Ballarat Road, Footscray.Though 72 years of age, he was apparently hale and hearty and his death from heart failure was quite unexpected. At a quarter past five on Tuesday evening he was walking on the main street. At a quarter past six he was taken suddenly ill and about an hour later died. Deceased was a native of Edinburgh and landed in Victoria when 18 years of age and for the greater part of 54 years lived at Maidstone and Footscray. He was employed at the Maribyrnong Meat Preserving Works for 25 years and for a number of years also was with Dalgety's.He was highly esteemed among the older residents of the district who knew him best. His wife survives him and a grown-up family, the members of which are Mrs. Captain Brown of Camberwell, Mr. David Douglas of Seddon, Mr. Ernest Douglas of Berwick, Mr. Norman Douglas of Footscray, Mrs. Robert Johnstone of Footscray, and Mr. Fred Douglas. The funeral on Thursday was largely attended. The remains were interred in the Anglican portion of the Footscray Cemetery, Mr. W.A. Warne carrying out the funeral arrangements.

1918 - Floral Attractions at Footscray Park
The season seems to have been a most suitable one for the growth and development of flowering plants. At the Park attractive displays are to be seen - beds of Iceland poppies, with their masses of orange and yellow flows, edged round with blue violas, making a striking display....... Another pleasing feature is to notice that public interest in the Park is steadily increasing, a fact which has recently been shown by the erection of a most serviceable and attractively designed ornamental seat, in rich Jarrah with overhead canopy, the gift of Mrs. Jane Douglas, formerly of Ballarat Road. This latest addition enhances greatly the attractiveness of the main avenue.Source : The Advertiser Newspaper, November 9, 1918
