1846 – Marriage to Ann Underhill
At the age of 19 years, he married Ann Underhill at Saint George’s Church. According to the Parish Record, both were minors. Thomas was employed as a Japanner and lived at Hospital Street, Birmingham. He signed his name. Ann gave no employment, lived in Summer Lane and her father was Samuel Underhill who was a Coach Harness Plater. Ann made her mark.
Witnesses to their marriage were Sarah Underhill and Edward Glover.

Five years after their marriage, Thomas and Ann settled down to life at G Court, 19 House - most likely one of the Back to Back houses. Their family now included two sons, Thomas Bate Ford, aged 4, born 1847 and Henry Ford, aged 2, born 1849. Thomas worked as a Japanner and Ann was a Tray Varnisher.

Another ten years and Joseph and Ann Ford are living at 5 Hospital Street, Birmingham. Joseph is still a Japanner, Ann an Oil Varnisher, their son Thomas is now Gun Finisher, whilst their youngest, Henry is still a scholar. They also have two nephews living with them - Henry, aged 16 (born about 1845) and George, aged 3 (born about 1858).

By relying on the transcription provided of the 1871 Census form, a ‘new’ son, Perry, had arrived. However, a check of the original census record reveals an error in the transcription of the very poor original hand-writing – “Perry” was actually “Henry”.

At the age of 24 years, their second son, Henry, married Mary Ann Gadd, although the transcription reads ‘Godd’. Witnesses to the marriage were his brother, Thomas Bate Ford and Martha Elizabeth Gadd. Henry’s father was Joseph Ford, a Japanner and Mary Ann’s father was Benjamin Gadd, a Nail Master. Both Henry and Mary Ann signed the register.

Thomas died at Birmingham in June of 1877. He was buried at the Warstone Lane Cemetery in Birmingham.

Now for a mystery. Thomas Bate Ford, described as a Gun Maker and a Bachelor died on July 23,1881 at 16 Albert Road, Aston-juxta-Birmingham and administration of his personal estate, worth £688 15s 3d. was granted to Ann Ford of the same address on September 3,188, Widow and Mother and only Next of Kin.
Eight years later an amended grant was issued. Administration of personal estate of Thomas Bate Ford late of 16 Albert Road, Aston-juxta-Birmingham Gun Maker died July 20, 1881 to Caroline Ford, widow. Effects £495. This replaced the former grant of September 1881.
1885 – Marriage of son, Henry Ford to Caroline Ford
I found a marriage between Caroline Ford, aged 26, spinster of Back 26 Well Street, Birmingham, father Francis Ford, deceased and Henry Ford, aged 36, Widower, Gunmaker of Back 26 Well Street, father Thomas Ford, deceased. This marriage took place on March 29, 1885 in Saint George’s Church, Birmingham.
Caroline Ford was the daughter of Francis Ford and Ellen Osborne, Francis being the brother of Thomas Ford, making the marriage between first cousins.

A check of the original documentation revealed the bride-groom’s surname was ‘Ford’ and not ‘Fred’.
1891 – Census
Henry Ford was a widower, his first wife, Mary Jane Godd having died in 1877. His two children, Henry Ford, aged 17 years and Mary Anne Ford, aged 15 years at the date of this census were included in his census list.
Caroline and Henry Ford went on to have several more children – Caroline Ford (born about 1886), May Ford (born about 1889) and William Ford (born about1890).
Ann Ford, mother of Henry Ford, had died in September of 1887 at home at Albert Road.
