1871 – Sophia Tingey Census

Residence at 3 Stafford Cottages, Clifton, Bedfordshire.

George Tingey was 36 years old and worked as a bricklayer’s labourer. He gave his birthplace as Henlow.

Sophia was 30 and was a straw-plaiter.
Their children were William, 3 years and 8-month-old Clara.

They had lots of family contact as Timothy West, Mary, nee West and their children lived next door at 2 Stafford Cottages. And around the corner at 1 Wrights Cottages, Clifton lived Ruben Mabot, Fanny, nee West and their family.

1881 – Sophia Tingey Census

In 1881 the family lived at 219 Well Street in Clifton. Their family had grown by the addition of George, Emily, Samuel and John Tingey.

George Tingey, aged 46, was now working as a Letter Carrier. All the children were still at school.

The family had now moved to 10 Metralabel Road (this as far as I can transcribe the handwriting) in Hackney, London.

George was still working as a Postman.

His sons, William and George were working as Shop Assistants, Clara was a Dressmaker and Emily a Milliner Assistant. John was a scholar.

What has happened to Samuel, aged 3 in the 1881 Census? Samuel had died in October 1881, aged 3 months.

1901 – Sophia Tingey Census

Now at 5 Holly Villas in Hackney, George, aged 66 is still delivering the mail as a Postman.

His daughter, Emily, unmarried and 26 years old, is a Tie Maker, while 21-year-old John is following in his father’s footsteps as a Postman.

1911 – Sophia Tingey Census

Things have changed for Sophia, now 70 years old. She is living with her married daughter, Emily Spenceley, 36 years who has been married for 4 years to Richard Spenceley, 34 years.

Emily works as a Tie Hand, whilst her husband works as a Motor Bus Conductor. They have a one-year-old son, Richard. They live in a 3-room house at 26 Haliday Street, Homerton, St John-at-Hackney, London.

1914 - Sophia Tingey Death

Sophia died on March 5 in 1914 at the Edmonton Infirmary, aged 73 years
