1919 - Murder Charge Withdrawn

At the City Court yesterday, mention was made of the case in which Oliverio Cardid, a Spaniard, 45 years of age, was charged with having murdered William Douglas, an attendant at the Royal Park Mental Hospital on September 28.

Detective Mercer said that Cardid had been examined by two doctors with the result that he had been transferred to Ararat Lunatic Asylum.

On Sunday, September 28 at the Mental Hospital while William Douglas and two attendants were endeavouring to transfer Caridad who was a patient from a large dormitory to a smaller one, the man became possessed of a revolver in some mysterious way and had shot Douglas dead.

The charge was accordingly withdrawn.

Note - not sure if this relates to 'our' William David Douglas - dates don't seem to match properly
