1851 – Australia
And we also know that she travelled to Australia from England with her parents and siblings on board the sailing ship, the “Reliance”, arriving into Adelaide in 1851 when Emma was 6 years old.

That she received little or no education despite her future brother-in-law opening and being headmaster at the Happy Valley School from the late 1850’s is clear from the cross that marked the place where her signature should have appeared on her marriage certificate.

No doubt Emma was kept at home to help her mother, Mary, care for the family and the new babies as they arrived.  She may also have helped with the agricultural work, side-by-side with her father and older brothers as they tried to scrape a living from their new piece of land in Happy Valley.

1861 – Happy Valley
Emma met the Chase family at some stage before her 17th birthday.  The Chase family were farming close by Happy Valley at Eyre’s Flat, south of Adelaide in South Australia.

Now to the story of the early years for William Chase before his marriage to Emma

William was 23 years old and Emma just 19.  William described himself as a farmer from Eyre’s Flat.  Emma’s father, John Warren and her brother-in-law, Francis Appleton, were witnesses to their union.  The marriage may well have been a shot-gun wedding because Emma was already more than 7 months pregnant.

1875 – Death of Rosetta Bertha Chase
Emma and William’s 11-year-old daughter, Rosetta Bertha Chase, died on August 16 in 1875 at Morphett Vale.  It must have been a dreadful blow to the family.  The poor child died of an abscess of the inner ear – today easily treated with our modern antibiotics, but back in 1875, a slow and painful death.

William Chase, husband of Emma, on the other hand, came from a family who has provided much colour for our peep into history.  Brushes with the Destitute Board, the Law Courts, theft, arson, death by explosion – all this and more - off-set by the more civic-minded exploits of local councillors

1878, January – Marriage of daughter, Laura Alice Chase
At only 16 years of age, Laura Alice Chase married Henry Thomas Rankin on January 23, 1878 at the residence of Laura’s uncle, Richard Appleton, in Happy Valley.  The event was advertised in the newspaper –

RANKIN – CHASE
On the 23rd January at Happy Valley by the Rev. J. Allen, Henry Thomas Rankin, of Port August, to Miss Laura Alice Chase, of Happy Valley

1878, November – Law Courts
Emma and William felt unable to contribute to the maintenance of William’s elderly father, Edward Chase, who, being destitute, had applied to the Courts for help back in 1865.

This is a notice that appeared in the newspaper in 1878 –

This was a case in the plaintiff, being in a destitute condition, sued his five sons for maintenance, and made application for 2 shillings per week each.

There were grandchildren for Emma and William – no doubt some of them provided joy for their grandparents, but some of them did quite the opposite!   Details of these descendants are recorded in their individual web pages, as well as some of their exploits.

1903 – Death of William Chase
At the aged of 64 years, William Chase died at Happy Valley.  The report of his death doesn’t seem to have made it into the local newspapers of the time.

He was buried in the Happy Valley Cemetery and his remains were later transferred to the New Happy Valley Cemetery when the new Reservoir was constructed.
