Stanley James Ford was the fifth born child of Joseph Samuel Ford and Marianette nee Kingham.  He was born in the first months of 1891 in Linton in Cambridgeshire – why Cambridgeshire and not in Bedfordshire, is not known.  Perhaps the family were visiting relatives, as according to the census of 1891, the family’s residence in that year was at 10 Henry Street, Luton in Bedfordshire.

GERTRUDE LAMB – HER EARLY LIFE

Gertrude’s Grandparents

The 1871 census taken in Shoreditch, London, showed Gertrude’s father’s family.  Her paternal grandfather was William Lamb, 49, a Book Binder, her grandmother, Mary Lamb, 45, and her uncles and aunt – her father’s siblings – William, 20, Book Binder; her father, Edmund, 12; Henry, 15; Walter, 13 (with whom Gertrude would live after the death of her parents); George, 11; John 9; and Clara, 6.Three of the older boys followed in their father’s profession – book binder and engravers.

Gertrude’s Parents

Gertrude’s father was Edmund Ernest Lamb, born 1853 in Middlesex and her mother was Mary Ann, nee Bloe, also born in Middlesex.   They were married on December 15, 1878, at St. Leonard’s Church Shoreditch when Edmund was 26 years old.

In the 1881 census in Camberwell, in London, her parents had just welcomed Gertrude’s elder sister, Mary Ann Lamb, aged 2 months.  Gertrude was to arrive in 1893.

1906 – Death of Gertrude’s Father
Looking at the census for 1901, it would appear that Gertrude’s mother may have already died, and in 1906, her father followed.

1909 – Death of Gertrude’s Elder Sister
Her elder sister, Sarah Rebecca Lamb, aged 26 years, died at Edmonton, in March 1909.  Gertrude was now an orphan, and it is possible that her eldest sister, Mary Ann Lamb, had married and moved away, or had also died.  So, Gertrude was sent to live with her uncle Walter, her father’s brother, at 158 Fairfax Road, Wood Green.

STANLEY JAMES FORD & GERTRUDE LAMB – THEIR LIFE TOGETHER

1917 – Marriage – Stanley James Ford and Gertrude Lamb

The marriage certificate, shows Stanley and Gertrude were married at The Registry Office in Edmonton, Middlesex on January 20th, 1917.  Stanley, aged 25 years was a bachelor, working as a Brass Finisher Journeyman.  His father, Joseph Samuel was deceased.

Gertrude was 24 years, a spinster and worked as a Shell Purse Lacquerer. The writing on the certificate is difficult to decipher, so the word “Purse” may be incorrect.  Gertrude’s father, Edmund Ernest was also deceased.   Both Stanley and Gertrude lived at the same address – 87 Burgoyne Road, Harringay.

The witnesses to their marriage were S.J. Ford and A.C. Ford – I am guessing that S.J. Ford was Sarah Jane Ford, wife of Stanley’s brother, George Dixie Ford and A.C. Ford may have been Algenon Percy Ford with an incorrect transcription onto the certificate copy.

1939 – Census – Stanley James Ford and family

Stanley James and his family were living at 26 Park Riding in Wood Green.  Stanley was working as a Metal Polisher.  His wife, Gertrude worked at home.  His daughter, Ruby, aged 22 years was a shaving brush maker.  His son, Stanley P.E., aged 20 years was a chemist’s laboratory assistant.

Looking at the corrections made in green ink, Ruby has recently married with her marriage name now Holding.

1942 – Death - Stanley James Ford
Stanley died at the relatively young age of 51 years.  At the time of his death, he had been living at 26 Park Ridings in Hornsey in Middlesex and working as a metal polisher.  He died on March 16 in 1942 at the Prince of Wales General Hospital in Tottenham.

The cause of his death was given as “Intestinal Obstruction” and “Peritoneel Bands”.  Most likely this was caused by a genetic defect which caused twisting of the intestines causing severe abdominal pain and ultimately death.
