WALLACE FORD – EARLY YEARS
My first introduction to Wallace Ford was through a large Ford family photograph my mother gave me many years ago.  Mum identified most of the people featured in the photograph, including Wallace.  His image portrayed a strong, reliable, honest, calm young man and my research into his life did not change my initial characterisation of the man – Wallace Ford, my grandfather’s brother.

Wallace Ford was the first-born son of Joseph Samuel Ford and Marionette Kingham, my great-grand-parents.   A younger brother of Wallace was my grandfather, George Dixie Ford.

1883 - Birth of Wallace Ford
Wallace was born to Joseph Samuel Ford and Marianette Kingham – my great grand-parents – in Luton, Bedfordshire on February 23, 1883 whilst the family was living at 151 Park Street, Luton.

1883 Birth Certificate - Wallace Ford, Luton, Bedfordshire

1890 - Baptism
Wallace’s parents moved from Luton, Bedfordshire to live briefly in Birmingham, Warwickshire in the late 1880’s – this was where Wallace’s father, Joseph Samuel Ford had been born.  On January 19, 1890 at Saint George’s Church in Birmingham Joseph and Marionette had their family baptised.

• Wallace Ford, 6 years old
• Algernon Percival Ford, 5 years old
• George Dixie Ford, 2 years old
• Rose Elizabeth Ford, 1 year old
1891 - Census, Luton, Bedfordshire
By 1891, the Census showed that the family had moved back to Luton, living at 10 Henry Street.  Information from the census reveals that Wallace’s father, Joseph Samuel Ford, worked as a Brass Finisher.  Another child had been added – Stanley James Ford.

1891 - Census, Luton, Bedfordshire

1901 - Census, Wood Green, Middlesex
Sometime during the following ten years, the Ford family moved to a new house - this time to Wood Green, near London in Middlesex - to 29 Pelham Place, Wood Green.

Wallace was now 18 years old and was working as a Machinist / Printer.  He was a tall, well-built young man, with a handsome face, dark hair, moustache and a direct gaze.  He dressed well and clearly took pride in his appearance.  Wallace was working as a Machinist.

WALLACE & ELIZABETH FORD – MARRIED LIFE
1908 - Marriage of Wallace Ford to Elizabeth Rose Warman
Wallace Ford was 25 years old when he married Elizabeth Rose Warman who was a year younger.  After banns, they married in St. Mark’s Church in Noel Park, Haringey (Middlesex) on June 8, 1908.  The marriage register showed that both Wallace and Elizabeth were literate and signed their own names to the register.

Elizabeth’s father, Charles Baker Warman worked at that time as a caretaker at Alexander School in Wood Green where the Warman family lived.

Wallace’s father, Joseph Samuel Ford was a Brass Polisher as was Wallace.  At the time of his marriage, Wallace was living with the Ford family at 61 Lymington Avenue in Noel Park.
Witnesses to their marriage were Wallace’s brother, Algernon Percy Ford and Edith Elizabeth Watts, probably either an aunt or cousin to Elizabeth – both of whom signed their names to the register.

After their marriage, the couple moved into a furnished room on the 1st floor at 61 Lymington Avenue, Wood Green – their landlord being Wallace’s father, J.S Ford.  They paid 5 shillings per week to rent the room.

1911 – Birth of son, George William Wallace Ford
In 1911, on July 10, Wallace and Elizabeth’s first-born child, a son was born. They named him George William Wallace Ford - presumably after Elizabeth’s grandfathers, George Watts and William Warman.  I wonder if this was an indication that Wallace was not close to his own father or his grand-parents?

1912 - Baptism of son, George William Wallace Ford
At a year old, their son, George William Wallace Ford, was baptized at St. Mark’s Church in Noel Park.  At the time the family were living at 49 Ringslade Road in Wood Green.

Wallace and Elizabeth’s second child – Rose Elizabeth Ford – was born on April 25, 1914.  The family were still living at 49 Ringslade Road, in Wood Green.

1914 - 1938
According to the Electoral Rolls, Wallace and his family continued living at 49 Ringslade Road in Wood Green until about 1926.  In 1926, the family moved to 2 Lakefield Road, also in Wood Green.
But not for long, in 1927, the family were recorded living at 2 Hilsdon Street in Wood Green.  Oddly enough, another change of address a year later - 1928 back to 2 Lakefield Road.

The electoral roll showed that in 1933, Wallace Ford, his wife, Elizabeth Rose Ford and his son, George William Wallace Ford were living at 2 Lakefield Road, Wood Green where they continued to live until about 1937.

In 1937 Wallace and his wife, Elizabeth Rose, his daughter, Rose Elizabeth and his son, George William Wallace were living at 27 Berwick Road in Wood Green.

1938 - Marriage of son, George William Wallace Ford
At the age of 27 years on June 11, 1938, Wallace and Elizabeth’s son, George William Wallace Ford married Elsie Caroline Riley in Barnet, Middlesex.  Elsie had been born in Hendon, Middlesex in 1914.

1939 - England and Wales Register
The England and Wales Register of 1939 was initially taken due to the onset of war with the purpose of producing National Identity Cards.  The register later came to be multi-functional, first as an aid in the use of ration books and later helping officials record the movement of the civilian population over the following decades and from 1948, as the basis for the National Health Service Register.

The 1939 Register is an extremely important genealogical resource, not only for the rich detail and information recorded for each person and household, but also in helping to bridge a thirty-year gap in census data.

The census taken in 1931 was destroyed during the Second World War and no census was carried out in 1941 due to the ongoing conflict. The 1939 register, as held by The National Archives, contains data only for England and Wales and does not include records from households in Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

Wallace aged 56 years and his daughter, Rose Elizabeth Ford, aged 25 years lived at 27 Berwick Road in Wood Green.  Wallace was recorded as working as a Metal Polisher (Sanitary Ware) and his daughter worked as a Typist in the Civil Service.

Wallace’s wife, Elizabeth Rose Ford, had moved to Shepshed in Leicestershire to 23 Moorfield Street to live with a family headed by Henry J Potter.    His wife, Ada and his daughter, Amy Christina also lived there, and Elizabeth Rose Ford is recorded as an Unpaid Domestic Worker.

Wallace’s son, George William Wallace Ford, aged 28 years and his wife, Elsie Caroline Ford, lived in Hendon, Middlesex and he worked as a Manufacturing Chemist Clerk.  He was also an APP Air Warden for his district.

1945 – 1954
During the years between 1945 and 1954, Wallace, his wife, Elizabeth Rose and his daughter Rose Elizabeth Ford were living at 45 Berwick Road, Wood Green.

1954 - Death of Wallace Ford
Wallace, suffering from Tuberculosis and Anaemia, was taken to Langdon Hills Hospital in Langdon Hills where he died on May 19 in 1954.  He was 71 years old and was a retired metal polisher – his employment working in the metals industry most likely contributed to his illness.

His son, George William Wallace Ford was with his father when he died.  The death certificate for Wallace gives his son’s address as 19 West Way, Edgware, Middlesex.
I have not yet found where Wallace was laid to rest.

1956 - Death of Daughter, Rose Elizabeth Ford
Wallace and Elizabeth’s daughter, Rose Elizabeth died shortly after Wallace’s death on August 3, 1956 at North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton.  She had never married. She was 42 years old at her death.  Prior to her death, she had been living at 27 Berwick Road, Wood Green, and had been employed as a copy typist.  The cause of her death was given as Hepatic Renal Failure and Hemorrhagia Chronic Nephritis.  Her brother, George Ford, living at 19 West Way, Edgware, registered her death on the day of her death.

Death Registration - Rose Elizabeth Ford, Edmonton, Middlesex

According to Electoral Rolls, Wallace’s widow, Elizabeth Rose Ford lived at 27 Berwick Road, Wood Green by herself until shortly before her death.
