1873 – Birth – Gertrude Olive Warren
Gertrude Olive Warren was born in 1873 in Happy Valley, South Australia, most likely at the house that Oliver’s father, John Warren, had built on his land. (After John Warren’s death, Gertrude’s father, Oliver Warren, inherited the house and land.)

Gertrude travelled to Kaniva in Victoria with her parents and siblings about 1883 when she was about 10 years old where her father tried his hand at farming under the settlement scheme called Grant’s Land Act, 1878.

Gertrude no doubt helped her mother, Elizabeth, nee Hales, especially when more siblings were added to the family, Beatrice in 1885 (Gertrude was 12) and Francis Oliver in 1887 (Gertrude was 14).  She also experienced the birth and death of her last-born sister, a baby girl named Olive Warren in 1890, followed shortly thereafter by the terrible loss of her mother in the following year.  All this, and Gertrude was just reaching adulthood at 18 years old.

She then returned to Happy Valley with her father and the other children where life just kept going sour for this young girl.

In 1895 when Gertrude was 22 years old and her sister, Bertha was just two years younger, the worst thing ever happened.  Her sister, Bertha was sexually assaulted by her father, Oliver, and was pregnant with his child.  Somehow, word leaked out and Oliver was charged with incest with his daughter.

Bertha gave birth to a child that died within a few days.  Oliver was tried and sentenced to 12 months hard labour.

Gertrude, the eldest child needed to take over as head of the shattered family.  I suppose she did as well as could be expected of a young woman with no - or at least extremely limited – income.  She was taking care of Bertha, aged 20 who would have been humiliated and shamed, of Charlotte, aged 18 and who appears to have been mentally unstable and would have been difficult to handle with scrapes with the law.  Also, the younger siblings, John, 16, William, 14, Rose, 12, Beatrice, 10, and Oliver Francis, 8 were under her care.

Her father, Oliver Warren, was released from prison about 1896, but from all accounts, he was a shattered and shambling old man, probably suffering from dementia.  Gertrude remained to care for the younger children which meant she almost missed the chance of marriage and happiness.
