Jess Vine - His Early Life
1838 - Birth
Jessie was born in 1838 to William Vine and his wife, Mary Ann Hargreaves.  Jessie was baptised on November 18 in 1838 at Henlow, Bedfordshire.

I could not find the 1841 census for this family, but I did find a Befordshire Gaol Register entry for a William Vine, born about 1810, which might be Jessie's father.  I enter it here for consideration rather than proof it is Jessie's father, although it looks fairly likely it may have been -

Eliza Devonshire and Jesse Vine - Their Life Together
1864 - Birth of Anne Eliza Devonshire
Ann Eliza Devonshire was born to Eliza Devonshire in 1864 before Eliza's marriage to Jesse Vine.

1865, December - Marriage of Eliza
in 1865, Eliza married Jesse Vine who was most likely Annie Eliza's father.  They were married in the Parish Church of Henlow in Bedfordshire on December 23, 1865.  Witnesses to their marriage were George Vine and Emma Vine - Jessie's brother and sister.

1867, September - Birth of Brother to Annie Eliza
Eliza gave birth to a son - Alfred Vine - born in 1867.  He was baptised on September 22 in 1867 in Henlow, Bedford.

1871, April - Census - 52 Main Road, Henlow
On the night of April 2, 1871 when the census was taken, Anne E. Devonshire, the 8 year old daughter of Eliza Vine, a school child, was living at 52 Main Road, Henlow with her mother Eliza, who was working as a straw plaiter, and her 4 year old brother, Alfred Vine.

Jesse Vine was not at home on this night - he was visiting his younger brother, William and his wife Jane Vine at Cudworth in Yorkshire.

In the house across the street (or next door) from Eliza Vine and her two children, at 51 Main Road, lived Jesse Vine's parents - William Vine, aged 60 and his wife, Mary A. Vine, age 54. William was an agricultural labourer and Mary was a straw plaiter. Two of their children, Charles, 16 and Fanny, 14 were also home that night.

1871, May - Death of Jesse Vine
Jesse Vine was working on the railways when he was killed, aged 32 years on May 8, 1871 in Cudworth.

This left Eliza Vine nee Devonshire and her two small children a widow.

Life for Eliza after the death of Jesse Vine

1878 - Remarriage of Eliza
Annie Eliza's mother, remarried on November 23, 1878 to Henry Wright at St. Mary's Church, Henlow.  Consequently, Eliza, nee Devonshire, aka Eliza Vine, now became known as Eliza Wright and step-mother to several of Henry Wrights' children.

1881 - Census
Eliza now Eliza Wright aged 42, was living with her husband, Henry Wright, aged 49, a general labourer, at 132 New Town, Henlow.  Eliza was still working as a straw plaiter.  Also with them were -

  • Henry Wright, her step-son, age 19, a general labourer
  • Emma Wright, her step-daughter, age 14, a straw plaiter
  • Alfred Vine, her son, age 14, an agricultural labourer
  • John Wright, her step-son, age 11, a scholar
  • Joseph Wright, her step-son, age 7, a scholar
  • Hannah Wright, her step-daughter, age 6, a scholar
  • Mary Ann Wright, her daughter, age 1.

Perhaps our Annie Eliza was an embarrassment to her mother or perhaps her new husband didn't want to take responsibility for two additional children, one of whom (Annie Eliza) was probably base born, when he already had several children of his own.

So, our Annie Eliza, aged 17 years sent to live at the school house in Clifton where she worked as a domestic servant in the household of Henry Gration.  A note about Henry Gration is included in the notes for Arthur Cornelius West.

1900 - Death of Henry Wright
Eliza's second husband, Henry Wright, died on May 2 in 1900 in New Town, Henlow.

1901 - Census
Eliza, now calling herself Elizabeth Wright, aged 62 years, a widow, was living at 188 New Town, Henlow with her daughter Mary Ann Wright, aged 21 years and her grandson, Leonard Wright, aged 1.

1902 - Application for Poor relief
At the age of 62 years, suffering from paralysis, and a widow, Eliza Wright, made application for Poor Relief stating that she was not able-bodied on account of her paralysis.  She was given 2 shillings and 6 1/2 pence relief.

Also on the page is a child of her sister, Ann Devonshire -  Elizabeth - and Elizabeth's three children, Bertha, Alfred and Charles Rook.
Elizabeth is a widow, is able-bodied and her two younger children were at school.  She was awarded 2 shillings and 2 pence.

1908 - Death of Eliza Devonshire
Eliza Devonshire, Vine, Wright, aged 68 years, died on March 1, 1908 in Henlow, Bedfordshire.
