    Obituary -

Death has taken from us a very old and highly respected resident, in the person of Mr. John Stagg House, who died on Sunday last, at the advanced age of seventy three. During a long residence, Mr. House has acted the part of a good colonist and kindly neighbour, and he leaves numerous descendants to perpetuate his name, and to emulate, I trust, his upright life.

He had been for some years an almost helpless invalid, and death was the result of natural decay. The interment took place this afternoon, and was largely attended by residents representing every portion of the district.

Andrew (aka Thomas Andrew) BARNES

Andrew (aka Thomas Andrew) BARNES  51st Regiment Tasmania  1838

The birth of Andrew Barnes has been traced back to the town of Bedford, Bedfordshire in England in 1817.  He was the son of Elias Barns (Hostler) and Mary Finch.  Elias and Mary where married on the 9 October 1798 at St Cuthbert, Bedford.  Andrew was christened at St Paul's Church, Bedford  on the 25th November 1817.  

He enlisted in the 51st Regiment, 2nd Yorkshire West Riding, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, on the 7 November 1837.  His occupation at the time of enlistment was labourer.  Research discovered that Private Andrew Barnes No 1148 arrived in Van Dieman's Land aboard the convict transport ship "Minerva" with 15 members of his regiment, they left England 28th May 1838.  On board the "Minerva" were convict boys from the hulks on the river Thames.

28th September - the bark 'Minerva', brown from Sheerness, 28th May with 139 prisoners (boys), 1 Sergeant and 14 Privates of the 21st and 1 private of the 28th regiments.  Surgeon superintendent J. Wilson esq. Passengers from the Cape, Lieutenant E. Bagot, 51st Lieutentant Vignolters and ensign Pryer of the 28th."

His discharge from the 51st regiment became effective on 31 July 1845 in 'Hobart Town'.  one of his army duties was garrison duty at Tasman Peninsula.  Andrew married Elizabeth House at St John's Church, New Town near Hobart on 4th June 1844.  Their first child Alfred Phillip was born on the 12 July 1844.  Sadly, Alfred died 12 August 1844 aged 1 month.  Cause of death was stated as "Convulsions".  The witness to their marriage was an Alfred Phillps.  The child was named after this gentleman and he will be mentioned again later.

It is about this time that Andrew became known as Thomas Andrew.  The reason for this is unknown.  He was Andrew at the time of his marriage and birth of his first child.  His second child, Thomas Andrew was born 1849 at Circular Head - at this time he was listed on the birth certificate as "father Thomas Andrew Barnes".  Their third child a daughter Sarah Ann was also born at Circular Head in 1850 and he was again Thomas Andrew Barnes.  Sadly Sarah Ann died at 2 months cause of death being Diarrhoea.  Our great grandfather Thomas Andrew Barnes (2) was the only surviving child.

We do not know the reason for Thomas Andrew and Elizabeth going to Circular Head but can presume it was to be near Elizabeth's brother John Stagg House.  John and his wife Eliza and four children came to Tasmania in 1842 and settled at Circular Head.  Thomas Andrew's occupations were Private in 51st Reg, labourer and when in Circular Head he was a dealer and shoemaker.

Thomas Andrew died in Launceston on the 14th may 1870 aged 52.  He died of senility.  He was buried in the grave yard of St Pauls' Church Launceston, section C, Row 13, grave 3.   Thomas left Stanley and moved to Launceston in 1864 and was employed  as an orderly from 1 February 1864  until his death in the hospital in 1870.  Elizabeth had predeceased him in 1857 aged 43.  She died of dropsy.

Their son, Thomas Andrew was very young, eight years old, when his mother died.  His father moved to Launceston when Thomas was 14.  It is presumed he was cared for by some of Elizabeth's family in Stanley.

TABLE CAPE

The "tyrant Death," whose approach is seldom, if ever, observed with joy, has paid several unwelcome visits to the district, during the last months, and has sorely afflicted several families, but none more than the family of the late Mr Jonathan House, who after three or four days illness of erysipelas, died on the 16th instant, aged 59 years.

Mr House, who was an old and highly respected resident of Circular Head, arrived here some twelve or eighteen months ago, and with his family settled in this district.

About five months ago typhus fever visited the family, and Mrs House went to her eternal happy home; a few days subsequently she was followed by her daughter Ann; and on the 18th instant Mr House himself was followed to his final earthly dwelling by a large number of mourners and sympathising friends.
